The goal of the
workshop was to identify how education in the three areas of Housing,
Manufacturing and Water can contribute to enable the team
with students to better manage and understand the issues of
designing sustainably for the urban poor and more specifically the
urban poor of South Africa. The aim was also that the three groups
worked closely together to come up with simple design solutions, that
focus on creating sustainable neighbourhoods and encourage social
In addition to the contributions in each of the three areas it will be discussed, what knowledge would be needed in an interdisciplinary sense to enable student to be proficient cross-fields.
The Short Course followed a three step approach to reach these:
1) Identifying and understanding the cultural, political and economical issues of Townships in South Africa
2) Presentation and discussion of pertinent solutions from the three fields (H, M, W).
3) A field-trip to Cape Town, to see whether the solutions designed are possible.
4) A small workshop to rethink and redesign their design strategies.

The Field-trip and Workshop in Cape Town, South Africa
Several presentations and meetings were planned with the department of Human Settlement, Department of Planning for Scottsdene, the University of Cape Town, the University of Stellenbosch and the site Engineer of Scottsdene. The point of organizing meetings with different municipalities and Universities in Cape Town was to give the students insight on how the reality of designing for townships is like.
After we had completed the meetings, where the students presented their strategies, and had visited the site and the surrounding areas we started with a workshop where they had to rethink their design strategies and come up with a new strategy. The workshop was very successful the new strategies proposed by the students were well thought out and had the possibility of actually being implemented. The result was a proposal that consisted in the use of the rainwater and at the same time greywater recycling. The idea was to receive the rainwater in the green roof designed and use it for the kitchen, showers or to wash. After this first process, this greywater was collected on a cistern underground to be finally used as a fertilizer for crops. The proposal considered the treatment of the both types of water to avoid infections and diseases. The relevance of the work is the effect that produces, from the team work to the results of the project. To think about the sustainable use of the water, offers social and cultural benefits as it creates a direct relation to the nature through the work of land. A new landscape takes value from the water recycling.
